Key Highlights
A Comprehensive View of Concussion
Richard’s work is rooted in the belief that concussion affects not just the physical brain but also consciousness (“Shen”), emotional well-being, and energetic balance. Drawing on the wisdom of East Asian medicine, he sees each patient as a whole person whose recovery requires attention to body, mind, and spirit. His treatments aim to support not only the resolution of symptoms but also the restoration of the patient’s sense of safety, stability, and inner vitality.
Awareness and Attunement
Central to Richard’s philosophy is the concept of awareness—both in the practitioner and the patient. By cultivating Shen, or conscious presence, Richard is able to attune deeply to his patients, guiding them to reconnect with their bodies, recognize their limits, and build resilience. His sessions emphasize mindful pacing, regular check-ins, and empowering patients to observe how their bodies respond in the hours and days following activities.
Integrative Treatment Strategies
Richard’s clinical toolbox includes a variety of gentle, targeted techniques:
- Minimalist Acupuncture using 4–8 precisely chosen points, which can include geometric configurations on the head for optimal effect.
- Breathwork and Somatic Movement to support emotional regulation and expand lung capacity.
- Collaboration with Trauma Therapies such as EMDR and sensory motor psychotherapy for complex or chronic cases.
- Environmental Adjustments including modifications to light, sound, and temperature to reduce sensory overload.
He emphasizes early intervention—ideally within 24 to 48 hours of injury—while also offering long-term support for chronic or unresolved cases. Richard carefully avoids overstimulation, particularly in the initial stages, favoring nuanced treatments over aggressive interventions.
Case Presentation
Female patient with extensive concussion history, presenting with a complex mix of neurological, emotional, and respiratory symptoms. Through a series of carefully attuned acupuncture sessions and breathwork exercises, the patient experienced marked improvements in energy levels, clarity, and symptom relief. Whether working with patients suffering from recent injuries or those navigating the long tail of chronic concussion symptoms, Richard consistently prioritizes patience, empathy, and precision
Educator, Mentor, and Advocate
Richard is also a dedicated educator, regularly sharing his knowledge with fellow practitioners and students. He emphasizes the importance of adapting techniques to each individual, monitoring the window of tolerance, and supporting the patient’s journey with ongoing feedback and compassion.
