Neuro-Functional Acupuncture Approach for the
Treatment of a Complex Back/Hip Condition
Dr. Michael Prebeg
Michael Prebeg, specializes in the treatment of sports injuries and sports performance optimization. Through the identification of dysfunction in soft tissue mechanics, sensory motor integration, perfusion and articular motion, he has treated athletes and produced unprecedented results in injury recovery and performance optimization. He teaches Neuro-Functional Assessment techniques and Dr Elorriaga’s Neuro-Functional Acupuncture techniques to health care practitioners all over the world. His private practice currently includes many of the world’s top professional athletes and Canada’s top executives.
Dr. Prebeg is a lecturer and instructor with the McMaster University Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Program. He is currently consulting Chiropractor with the New York Yankees Baseball Club and NHL Players Association. Since 2001 he has covered many world class events in numerous different sporting activities. His vast clinical experience provides patients and students alike with an extraordinary learning and clinical experience.
Key Highlights:
Dr. Michael Prebeg, DC, presents a case of a 30-year-old professional hockey player, presenting with anterior hip pain, described as a pinching sensation, along with intermittent low back tightness. This condition was affecting his athletic performance and daily activities.
During the assessment, the player exhibited limited internal rotation and forward flexion, indicating restrictions in movement. Muscle testing revealed weakness in specific muscle groups, particularly the gluteus medius and maximus.
The treatment approach involved stimulating the obturator nerve, which directly innervates the femoroacetabular joint, to improve hip mechanics and alleviate low back pain. Acupuncture was applied to various targeted areas, including the adductor longus and magnus, to enhance neuromotor function and restore movement patterns.
Post-treatment assessments showed significant improvements in the player’s range of motion and muscle strength, indicating effective neuromotor stimulation. The case highlighted the importance of understanding anatomical connections and the role of acupuncture in treating sports-related injuries.
Dr. Prebeg focuses on the neuro-functional model of acupuncture and its application in treating musculoskeletal issues, particularly in athletes. He emphasizes the importance of understanding adaptive demands on the body and recognizing patterns of muscle imbalances that can lead to pain and dysfunction. He discusses specific assessment techniques, including neuromotor behavior and movement capabilities, to identify areas of tension and inhibition.
