Key Highlights:
This Case presentation focuses on a multifaceted approach to treating neuromuscular facial conditions, particularly Bell’s Palsy, using various acupuncture techniques. Michelle Gellis, L. Ac emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive treatment plan that combines scalp acupuncture, motor point needling, submuscular needling, facial cupping, and derma-rolling. Michelle shares insights from her journal publications and explains how different modalities can yield more effective and lasting results than a singular approach.
Michelle presents a comprehensive and holistic approach to treating Bell’s Palsy, emphasizing the importance of addressing the root causes rather than just the symptoms. By focusing on underlying issues such as blood stagnation and Qi deficiency, practitioners can enhance long-term recovery and functional restoration. A key aspect of the discussion is the precise measurement of scalp acupuncture points, ensuring targeted stimulation of facial motor and sensory functions for improved neuromuscular control. She highlights the significance of motor points in acupuncture, distinguishing them from trigger points and demonstrating their role in re-setting muscle function in cases of paralysis. The concept of neuroplasticity is also explored through the use of dermarolling, a technique that aids in retraining the nervous system and promoting facial muscle recovery. The benefits of facial cupping and Gua Sha for lymphatic drainage and circulation are presented , illustrating how these techniques contribute to both aesthetic improvements and deeper healing by addressing fascial adhesions. While conventional treatments like steroids remain a primary approach for Bell’s Palsy, Michelle underscores acupuncture’s complementary role in enhancing recovery, particularly when applied early.
